06 · FAQ

Things people ask us in freshers week

I have never played squash. Is that a problem?

No — it is the most common way to join. Roughly two thirds of new members each year have never held a racket. Taster sessions exist precisely for this!

Do I need my own racket?

Not at first. We keep a bag of club rackets and a tub of balls courtside. When you do want your own, ask the exec before buying — people will lend you advice.

How much does it cost in total?

£6 for club membership for the year, £112 if you have not yet paid the Sports Club and SU Sports Federation fees.

Can I play without joining the teams?

Absolutely. Many members never play a BUCS fixture. Club nights, coached sessions and internal box leagues are the core of the club, and you can dip in and out around deadlines.

Are the socials compulsory or drink-heavy?

Neither. There is always a non-drinking option, sober members are common, and nobody keeps a register. Circling is a must have experience, but many members prefer to just stay for the squash.

What if I can only make one session a week?

That is fine. There are no obligations whatsoever. Tell us your timetable and we will point you at the sessions that fit.

Ways to get in touch
